John Jenkins
Bio
John Jenkins (b. 1971, Texas City, United States) makes paintings and conceptual artworks. By experimenting with aleatoric processes, Jenkins formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the seemingly random works. The thought processes, which are predominately private, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to popular culture and mysticism, are frequently revealed as visual assemblages.
Jenkins creates situations in which everyday objects are altered or detached from their natural function. By applying specific combinations and certain manipulations, different functions and/or contexts are created. With Surrealist and Pop Art methodologies, he presents seemingly banal objects as well as references to texts, painting and architecture. Historical texts and constructivist designs are juxtaposed with trivial objects. Categories are subtly reversed.
His works feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections which make it possible to revise art history and, even better, to complement it. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. With the use of appropriated materials which are borrowed from a day-to-day context, he makes work that deals with the documentation of events and the question of how they can be presented. The work tries to express this with the help of physics and technology, but not by telling a story or creating a metaphor.
His works are an investigation into representations of (seemingly) concrete ages and situations as well as depictions and ideas that can only be realized in painting. John Jenkins currently lives and works in Houston.
